Approaching a new musical instrument with an attitude of open curiosity and an enthusiasm to try, can be the first step in a lifetime of music making. For a child, having the opportunity to explore musical instruments with an adult who will model and positively reinforce this curiosity and enthusiasm and who can encourage them to reach further, keep going and to keep exploring is invaluable.

Introduce Appropriately introduce the instrument verbally or non-verbally and setting it down within the patients reach

Demonstrate Play the bare minimum, a selection of notes or a short rhythm to instigate and validate patient ‘play’

Take Time Allow time for exploration, encourage the patient in a game of follow the leader, swop roles and copy them

Follow Respond to the patient's expressive creative play or support them by learning a tune together

Stay Aware Observe facial expressions, body language and patient responses to engagement, when is it time to end?
